Action 21 - 30th Anniversary
Do you remember Agenda 21? Or our first shop at the Princes Drive tip? If so, please read on – we need your memories.
In 1996, as a follow up to the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, Warwick District Council launched a local plan of action called Agenda 21. Various groups were set up on themes such as energy, transport, allotments and food. A few years later, it was relaunched as Action 21 which became a stand-alone company and later on a charity.
Our first charity shop opened in 2006 at the Princes Drive tip, moving to Sydenham in 2011 and our current location in 2014.
To help us celebrate this anniversary early next year, we’re keen to have your memories and photos about the launch of Agenda 21 and the follow up years, whether as a volunteer, member of staff or a customer.
Please send them to anniversary@action21.co.uk by the end of November 2025.

Fancy a new challenge as Trustee of a local charity?
Action 21 is looking for volunteer trustees with an interest in sustainability to join our board.

Donations
We have now closed our online booking system in order to process the increasing number of drive-by donations more effectively.
- Please note that we may not be able to accept all your donations on the same day, depending on capacity in the donation sorting area so please feel free to call us to check. (Shop 01926 886438 | Office: 01926 339077)
- Please have a look at our donations page Donation Guidelines for a list of items we cannot accept because of legal and insurance restrictions.

Work For Us
We have a vacancy for a Shop Manager at the Re-Useful Centre which will soon be extending hours to open 7 days a week. Please see the Work for Us page for more details
Gardening volunteers
We are soon to be starting a new project of 'guerilla gardening' supported by Warwick District Council to bring some joy to unloved sites around the area. We would welcome volunteers with a bit of gardening knowledge to help the General Manager in leading this initiative.
Please see our Volunteering page on how to apply
We are also looking for shop volunteers, particularly in the following areas:
Clothes sorting, Till work and Electrical PAT testing.

About Action 21
Action 21 is a local volunteer-based charity
that aims to reduce the environmental impact of the Leamington and
Warwick communities and raise awareness of the climate crisis and the benefits of sustainable
living.

Re-Useful Centre
Action 21’s Re-Useful Centre saves over 100 tonnes
of donated items from landfill each year by selling second hand bikes,
bric-a-brac & kitchenware, tools, clothes,
shoes & accessories, books, CDs & DVDs, small electrical items
and small items of furniture

Volunteering
Our
volunteers are key to Action 21’s continuing success. Volunteering is a
great way to meet new people and develop new skills. So, why not join the
team?

Sherbourne Recycling Centre, Coventry
Louise (General Manager) and Nikki (volunteer) had a tour around a new centre which is now processing all our kerbside recycling.
Sustainability values:
- Nothing is sent overseas. Once sorted, the materials are redistributed to UK companies to be processed for re-use.
- 100% of the energy used is renewable, coming from photovoltaic cells and the neighbouring Energy from Waste (EfW) plant.

This is part 3 of a series of blogs for Action 21. Part 1 was about how Covid had made us think about our role within the community. Part 2 covered the story of Action 21 and its link to Agenda 21, the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit goals on environmental protection and sustainability. Part 3 moves on to tackle the history and culture of climate science denial.
