Sustainability Ranger Volunteer Role

Project Overview

Action 21’s Sustainability Centre in East Lodge, Jephson Gardens is an exciting and publicly accessible hub for all the green, environmental and sustainable local projects.  There’s 2 visitor info rooms with information about sustainability initiative and 2 gardens showcasing different ways to “grow your own” on organic, permaculture principles.

Sustainability Rangers help to engage the public with the centre as well as exciting sustainability initiatives going on in the rest of Jephson Gardens. The role will offer an interesting variety of tasks ranging from growing organic food to surveying pond life, while providing a friendly point of contact for visitors to Jephson Gardens.

Volunteer tasks

These depend on your capabilities and preferences:

  • Speaking to people about local green initiatives
  • General gardening
  • Biodiversity surveys
  • Building compost structures
  • Conducting satisfaction surveys with visitors to the park
  • Providing a presence in the sustainability centre
  • Assisting with events and workshops
  • Acting as a point of contact for the public in Jephson Gardens
  • Providing office & research support to the Community Ranger

Skills/previous experience sought

  • No particular experience or skills are required as full training and support will be provided.
  • We ask individuals to be enthusiastic about the role and willing to learn to work using their initiative.
  • Volunteers will be required to work with the public, children and vulnerable adults.
  • Volunteers should also be willing to work in an outdoor environment.

Benefits of volunteering

  • On the job training and support is provided, giving you the opportunity to build on your skills.   Review sessions will be offered to check you’re enjoying your volunteering placement and that your needs are being met.
  • You’ll be part of the wider network of Action 21 volunteers, receiving regular updates and information on our projects and invites to our well attended volunteer socials
  • Expenses: We believe that volunteers should not be out of pocket for donating their time and effort and so we pay back all volunteers’ reasonable travel expenses, there’s tea, coffee & biscuits on tap and we provide lunch if you volunteer for a full day
  • Excellent work experience, especially for people pursuing a career in horticulture, conservation or community based roles.
