Action on Re-Use
Practical Action
Action 21 runs the Re-Useful Centre in Sydenham, and previously ran the Recycle Warehouse at Princes Drive, Leamington Spa. Check out the Re-Useful Centre pages to find out more, or come along to see re-use in action!
History
The Recycle Warehouse on Princes Drive was born out of the Recycling Group several years ago. Since then, the working group has dissolved as the energy and time of staff and volunteers was directed into the project. The shop receives donations - mainly large bulky things like Sofas, wardrobes and bikes - that are too good to tip and sells them back to the public.
As we've been operating over the years we've come to realise that the 'Recycle Warehouse' is in fact a 'Re-use Warehouse'!
In the 'Heirachy of Waste', re-use is one step above recycling so we thought we would make the commitment to promote that even more...
And so, building on the success of this model, in May 2009, The Re-Useful Centre was open in Sydenham. Again to promote the re-using of items - esp bulky ones, we now have a second shop. We have moved our bike workshop over here, as well as online sales to benefit from the increase in space. More projects will soon follow with a furniture restoration workshop, paint and wood re-use scheme.
We are still involved in recycling at the Peace Festival (and other events) each year where Action 21 volunteers set a good example by litter picking and sorting rubbish!
At the end of January 2011, Action 21 sadly left Princess Drive premises having been unsuccessful in our Tender to continue to run the shop. More information can be found in our press release on the subject.
Double-decker-bus-ometer
Since we started our Re-use operations, Action 21 has saved the equivalent of
50 double-decker buses
from landfill; that's over 400 tonnes of goods.
