Pruning Workshop was a cut above the rest!

Canalside’s Amy Willoughby showing how it’s done

On the 25th of January, in partnership with Canalside Community Food, around 20 people came down to our fruit tree pruning workshop. The aim of the event was to learn about pruning young pear and apple trees to develop their shape and growth, as well as investigating instances of tree disease. The project was led by the expertise of Gareth Davies, Canalside’s orchard manager and Action 21 trustee, and Dick Ashworth, who has been involved with the orchard since the very beginning. The entire morning was a great success, filled with discussion, questions and a fire lit by the orchard which meant everyone could have some hot tea! The event was followed by a Canalside Community Food social which included a soup lunch and a traditional Wassailing ceremony.

This event was a great success, and we hope it gave people the confidence to grow and care for their fruit trees. We want to thank Canalside Community food for all their hard work and we hope to work closely with them in the future.

A big thank you to everyone who came! It was a fabulous way to start off our packed 2014 event schedule. If you don’t want to miss out on our next events, remember to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter or sign up to our monthly e-mail newsletter.
