Project overview
Action 21 distributes two newsletters on a regular basis. We send out ‘Transaction’ on a quarterly basis to all of our paying members and we send out ‘Volunteer Voice’ every two months to all of our volunteers.
Principal Function of Volunteer
You will assist the newsletter editor in producing either of the newsletters, using headings, photographs and illustrations to design creative layouts.
Tasks and Activities
As a volunteer you will carry out some or all of the following activities, depending on your individual capabilities and preferences. This list is only a guide to the types of activities that may be required.
- Receive the content of the newsletter and design the layout as it will appear in the newsletter
- Use headings, photographs and graphics as appropriate to make the newsletter reader friendly and attractive.
- Use either word and PDF or other design software to create a master copy of the newsletter ready to be printed and emailed out to subscribers

Skills/Qualifications/Experience sought
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft office
- Ability to work independently and use initiative
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Experience of designing newsletters is desirable but not essential
Minimum age: 16 years
Time commitment required
Probably between 1 and 6 hours per week but will depend on which of the newsletters you’d like to help out with and what tasks you’d like to take on.
Training, Reviews & Support
General
- Registration session with Amy, the Volunteer Development Worker, to provide an overview of Action 21 and what volunteering on our projects involves. Also gives you a chance to ask any questions you may have.
- Project Induction and general support and guidance from Action 21 office staff as appropriate.
- End of probation review session (after 4 weeks or sessions of volunteering; with Amy and/or the project manager as appropriate)
- 6 monthly review sessions
Expenses
You can claim back reasonable expenses for travel. How you go about claiming back these costs will be explained in more detail during your induction.
If you have the time to volunteer for a full day (9:30-4:30pm) we’ll even give you a free lunch!
