Green electricity

One simple way of switching from fossil fuel to renewable energy is to sign up for a green electricity tariff.

How to increase demand for renewably produced electricity

In selling you a unit of green electricity the supply company generates one unit of renewable electricity or buys in that amount and passes it on to you. In this way you as a consumer can increase demand for renewable electricity. Or this was the case until April 2002, after which electricity companies were obliged to produce a percentage of their electricity renewably. This percentage is due to rise gradually to 15% by 2015. By carefully selecting your electricity company you can ensure that the green electricity you buy does create demand additional to the Renewable Obligation.

The issue is fairly complex. However Green Electricity Marketplace Ltd. have a useful website that tells you what is available in your locality and which companies are more highly recommended and why.

Green electricity

Action 21 has affinity relations with two of the most environmentally friendly green electricity suppliers. Whichever company you do decide to buy your green electricity from, in switching to green you have the satisfaction of knowing the electricity you are using

  • does not contribute to climate change in the way that fossil fuel use does, and
  • avoids the dangers of nuclear power.
