Green Champion
Volunteer Role description
After successfully completing a training course, Green Champions will have the skills, knowledge and confidence to communicate effectively about sustainability issues and what people can do locally to live their lives more sustainably. Green Champions will then attend a wide range of events to engage with people about sustainability and help people take positive action. Green Champions can use display material, a Directory of local resources and various publications to be the face of a ‘Green Roadshow’ and engage with people about sustainability.
As a volunteer you will carry out some or all of the following tasks depending on your individual capabilities and preferences.
• Undertake a training course about effective communication, services and resources that exist locally to help people live their lives more sustainably and signposting the public to help them take positive action.
• Learn at the training course to communicate confidently and effectively about sustainability issues to engage and enthuse people.
• Communicate effectively at various public events to a wide range of people. This may include schools, community groups, farmers’ markets, parish councils and other instances that may be appropriate.
• Engage confidently with people about sustainability issues with particular focus on the topics of energy, food, transport and waste.
• Give out information to the general public about sustainability issues and local resources that are available as required.
• Communicate effectively with people at events you organise yourself or that you are asked to attend.
• Deliver talks and presentations to various local groups, organisations and local events as previously booked by Action 21 or yourself.
• Take part in occasional environmental promotion events at the Recycle Warehouse as organised by Action 21.
• Use the resources that are provided to reinforce and assist you with your work.
• Attend events on your own or with other volunteers.
• Work within your own communities or further a field as you prefer.
• You will have the option to specialise in an area of interest to you and receive further training.
To be successful in this role, you will need the following skills and qualities:
- Willing to engage with the public about green issues
- An interest in sustainability issues
- Good verbal communication skills
- Enthusiasm for the role
- Willing to attend events individually or in pairs, independently from staff

• All out of pocket expenses paid. For example, travel expenses will be paid to volunteers attending events. There will be an emphasis on using more sustainable travel options for traveling to and from events.

Availability
- Volunteers need to attend the two evening sessions of training
- Volunteers must be available to attend a number of public events in Warwickshire throughout the year as required.
- There is no formal requirement for Green Champions to attend a certain number of events. However, we would expect that everyone who volunteers for this role will be able to attend events for a total of at least 12 hours in a year (including travel and any preparation). For instance, this may be made up of two one-day events or a few half day events over the period of a year.
Location
- Training will be in held locally.
- Volunteers will attend events in their own communities but could be throughout Warwickshire.
