Call for help to find Action 21 new premises

Action 21 is looking to find new premises in the light of the news that part of Sydenham Industrial Estate – the local sustainability charity’s current location – is being strongly considered for housing development.

Action 21 has operated at Ramsey Road since 2009, when a local property owner assisted the local sustainability charity to set up a second re-use shop in one of his properties. Following the loss of the tender at the Princes Drive Household Waste Recycling Centre in 2011, the charity consolidated its operations at Ramsey Road, where it has built a thriving community of customers and volunteers.

The need to relocate is being welcomed by the charity. Renting premises will provide security of tenure and a much stronger foundation from which to continue its operations and plan future sustainability-themed projects.

Now in its 18th year, Action 21 has been self-financing for the past few years, relying on the proceeds generated by the Re-Useful Centre, a facility that enables the local community to divert useful items from landfill.  The Re-Useful Centre provides a valuable source of donated low-cost furniture and other manufactured goods for the surrounding community. Action 21 additionally offers a wide range of volunteering roles, enabling people of many ages and stages to gain work experience, participate in community focused-activity and, for those that are unemployed, increase their chances of finding employment. In 2012-2013, the most cited reason for volunteers leaving Action 21 was because they had found employment.

John-ArmstrongJohn Armstrong, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said: “The staff and volunteers at Action 21 have enjoyed their time at Ramsey Road, whilst providing a valuable and much-needed service to the local community, many of whom are on low incomes and benefit from purchasing items at the Re-Useful Centre. We hope our volunteers and our loyal expanding customer base will all join us at our new location. But – we do not know where that will be yet, and would very much appreciate any suggestions.”

The charity is looking to rent a warehouse space of about 10,000 square feet, ideally within two miles of Ramsey Road, with good parking space so customers can easily donate items. Due to the speed that the planning application is proceeding, Action 21 ideally needs to have found new premises by the end of April 2014.
